Print & Design Tips

Tip of the month:
If you are planning a barrel fold, you'll need to make each segment slightly smaller than the previous one. Allow a difference of at least 1/16" from one panel to the next. It depends on the bulk of the paper you're using, you may need more than that. Ask advice while planning the project!
PREPRESS

Embedding & Links

When prompted to include the placed image in the document please choose no, choosing yes makes for a document that is large and unmanagable. It is better to keep the images as external links.

Fonts

Postscript fonts have 2 parts: 1. Printer font. 2. Screen font. Both parts MUST be included. 3. Open type (cross platform) 1 part. 4. Truetype fonts have only 1 part. If embedding fonts anywhere embed the complete font not the subset font. Collect fonts or Package for service provider does not collect the complete font family.

Hairlines

Applying the Hairline Produces the thinnest line possible for the given output device. This line is acceptable on a 300-1000 dpi laserprinter but will be very thin on a 2540 dpi imagesetter. Please set lines as .25pt, .3pt or even .5pt if the design will allow it.

Job Folder

Please include all fonts(screen and printer PS), images, art and documents in your folder. This will save time and allow us to make adjustments if needed. It is also less confusing to have only the elements that are required.

Nesting

Placing a tiff into a eps and then placing it into your document can cause problems. It is better to place the tiff and eps into the document separately. Also it is better to place than to paste.

PDFs and Acrobat

Proper settings must be made when creating a pdf for print. Progressive can supply these settings via e-mail. Remember to embed complete fonts when creating a pdf.

RGB, CMYK and Spot colors

Red, Green and Blue(RGB) are the colors used to view images on Computer and TV screens. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) are the ink colors used to print images on paper. Spot PMS colors are custom colors used in addition to CMYK. Your full color images need to be saved as CMYK or spot PMS colors, not RGB. Note also that RGB has a larger gamut than CMYK, and could produce unwanted color if we convert. f you create a new logo in a match color, you should also create a CMYK version to assure consistency when printing four-color process. Again, this is particularly important with digital printing.

Tints

When designing a product use tints of the same PMS color, do not use different PMS colors to reflect screens of the original PMS color. Use tints to deepen color. For a deeper, richer black, run a 50% or 70% cyan, then overprint with black. For a warmer black, run a 50-70% magenta tint-then overprint with black. To deepen the color overall, double up on colors. Run a 70% black and then overprint with black.

Transparency

When using transparency it is better to import native file formats. (i.e. Photoshop psds or illustrator ai files) If you export or save an EPS out of illustrator the transparency is flattened already and will view correctly but may print incorrectly. You can also import transparent objects as a pdf and it will maintain the transparency.
